The corporatization of the University
Noam Chomsky

Public education is rooted in the class conflicts of the time. Ralph Waldo Emerson noted that the political leaders of his time called for mass public education as a result of fear. The laboring population needed to be educated to keep them form the"throats" of their leaders. This education's purpose was to encourage them to accept their fate in wage-slavery, to limit their understanding, to discourage free thought and to indoctrinate them into support of the political system.

Education in the US is increasingly run by the corporate sector. This is also marked by a sharph increase in tuition. This is at a sharp contrast to the the rest of the world . In many countries, including Mexico, Germany, and Finland, education is completely free. This is the cause huge and punishing amountts of student debt in the states. This is the source of a tremendous trap for American students that locks them into the corporate system buy their debts. Unlike the other centers of high education in the world, education in the States is run for profit.

There is an ongoing process of defunding public education and sending it to the private  corporate sector. This is side by side with a process of "demonizing" teachers and teachers unions to devalue education and to promote corporate profit.
